SMR’s are Shaping the Future of Nuclear Power Worldwide

| | |

  • Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology is a key part of the goal to develop clean, safe, and affordable nuclear power.
  • SMRs have many advantages, such as their physical size, relatively small physical footprints, lower price points, ability to be sited in smaller locations not viable for larger nuclear power plants, and the ability for incremental power additions.
  • SMRs have caught the attention of INRA, and are seen as a promising technology for the future of nuclear power.

Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology is a key part of the goal to develop clean, safe, and affordable nuclear power.

There are many advantages to SMRs such as their relatively small physical footprint, lower price point, ability to be sited in smaller locations not viable for larger nuclear power plants, and the ability for incremental power additions.

The Department of Energy (DOE) has recognized the immense value SMRs can provide the nation. They have provided support to the development of light water-cooled SMRs and are also interested in the development of SMRs that use other coolants such as liquid metals, salts, and gasses. These coolants have many potential safety, operational, and economic benefits.

SMRs have not only attracted attention of regulators, but internationally as well. Members of the International Nuclear Regulators’ Association (INRA) expressed interest in the growing technology. The members of the INRA consist of Canada, France, Germany, Japan, The Republic of Korea, Spain, Sweden, the UK, and the USA.

Members whose countries are pursuing new nuclear programs have to collaborate on generic reactor design assessments and licensing. They have to create mutual agreements that are at the highest standards of nuclear safety and security.

With the international attention and collaboration on SMR technology, it is no surprise that it can potentially be the most used technology amongst nuclear power.
