Energy Poverty vs. Clean Power: How Nuclear Energy Can Empower Billions and Save the Planet

by | May 27, 2023 | Environment, News, Nuclear

  • Despite the concerns, nuclear energy is a safe and carbon-free source of energy that can help the world transition to a sustainable future.
  • There is a growing support for nuclear energy, as it’s seen as a clean and reliable alternative to fossil fuels.
  • The demand for nuclear energy is growing, and with growing support, it is going to become a reality.

The move to making this world a more sustainable place has been going on for decades. Although there have been countless advances in shifting away from coal, the coal percentage of the total global energy supply has remained nearly unchanged for over half a century. This means that our rate of CO2 production is increasing, going the opposite way of what the world wants to strive towards.

There have been many concerns about nuclear energy. The general public fears the safety of nuclear energy due to the known stigma of nuclear weapons. Additionally, many fear nuclear energy because of events such as the Fukushima, Three Mile Island, and Chernobyl nuclear incidents. However, the number of people that die each year from smoking is much greater than the amount of people that died from all of these incidents combined. All three nuclear incidents combin ed resulted in a total of around 33 deaths.

Although many raise concerns regarding anything nuclear, it is one of the safest and carbon-free energy sources. There has been rising support for nuclear energy. Across the United States, the support for nuclear energy has risen to 60%, including a rise in support from Democrats from about 38% in 2018 to 59% today. There is too much of an urgency for the push of nuclear energy to become reality, and the previous nuclear incidents should not be dwelled upon.

According to many analyses, it should take 50-100 years to completely transition from a fossil fuel burning world to a carbon-free world. Nuclear energy has increased its share of global energy tremendously in about 50 years leading up to 2019. There needs to be stronger pushes of nuclear energy to make it be the leading energy source. There are demands for having a safe, cheap, reliable source of energy. A solution would be nuclear energy.
