Rolls-Royce teases Micro-Reactor

Rolls-Royce, known for crafting supercars and airplane engines, has disclosed a new mobile nuclear-powered reactor that draws parallels to the reactor shown in Marvel’s Iron Man movies. This innovation aims to transform clean energy solutions for use on Earth and potentially beyond. Rolls-Royce anticipates that the first operational small modular reactor (SMR) will be up and running by 2029, with regulatory approval expected to be finalized later this year.

This week, the British company unveiled its Micro-Reactor Concept Model, highlighting its capacity for zero-emission power. Rolls-Royce stated in a release accompanying a design video, “Our advanced nuclear technologies support many global Net Zero targets, solving energy dependence across many industries.” They posted a video on X explaining how the nuclear micro-reactors work. The company elaborated on its website about the micro-reactor, clarifying that while both micro-reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs) employ nuclear technology, they fulfill distinct roles within the Rolls-Royce nuclear portfolio.

The micro-reactor features a compact, modular design capable of generating 1 to 10 megawatts of power based on proven nuclear technology. The reactor is designed with flexibility, capable of deployment via rail, sea, and potentially even into space, making it a versatile power source for a range of applications, according to Rolls-Royce. Each uranium particle within its core is shielded by multiple layers of protection, ensuring resilience against extreme conditions.

“The Rolls-Royce Micro-Reactor has a high-power density, which means that it can reliably, flexibly and sustainably support a range of operational demands, providing power and heat output, as required, ” Rolls-Royce explained. The advancement of this portable reactor signals a new era in nuclear technology, finding use across various sectors such as defense, remote civil and industrial power generation, and space exploration.

In military applications, the micro-reactor is engineered to deliver durable, secure power for both Main and Forward Operating Bases, requiring minimal maintenance and training. Rolls-Royce asserts that it contributes to the defense sector’s energy shift, bolsters national security, and holds substantial potential for export.

As of remote civil applications, the micro-reactor offers enduring, clean power for isolated microgrids and strategic locations such as overseas territories and islands. This reduces reliance on conventional power sources and alleviates strain on national infrastructures.

In terms of  industry, the system ensures uninterrupted, dependable power, promoting grid independence and enabling combined heat and power generation. Rolls-Royce asserts that this capability will assist high-demand sectors in meeting clean energy and net-zero targets.

In space, the micro-reactor’s high-density power design positions it as suitable for planetary exploration and spacecraft propulsion. It provides continuous power for lunar bases and satellite movement, thereby supporting advancements in scientific and technological capabilities in space.
